Arachidonic acid is a key regulatory omega-6 essential fatty acid. It is stored in muscle cells, and released when the muscle fibers are stimulated during intense exercise or resistance training. It acts to control the core rate of muscle protein synthesis, partly by increasing cellular sensitivity to anabolic hormones such as testosterone, insulin, growth hormone, and IGF-1 (Insulin-like Growth Factor 1).
